Katia & Marielle Labèque perform Bernstein's West Side Story

Philharmonie de Paris

Production Date: 10/05/2015
44 Min

In the 1980s, none other than Leonard Bernstein himself encouraged the American musician Irwin Kostal to write a two-piano arrangement of his musical West Side Story for Katia and Marielle Labèque. Kostal was among those closest to Bernstein's gritty 1950s take on the Romeo and Juliet story, having already created the original orchestration for the musical. The Labèque sisters have delighted international audiences for decades and, in performance with performs here with two percussionists, demonstrate the combination of tonal sense and rhythmic verve essential to Bernstein's music. This incandescent performance was recorded at the new Philharmonie in Paris.
