From the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, this 2018 concert sees pianist Daniil Trifonov bring his unique gifts to one of the foundational concertos of musical Romanticism: Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto of 1845, a work that seamlessly mixes the composer's characteristic interiority and lyricism with the virtuoso display that the genre calls for. The programme is bookended by Finnish maestro Hannu Lintu conducting the Gulbenkian Orchestra in 20th-century works by two of his compatriots: Einojuhani Rautavaara's atmospheric Cantus Arcticus and Sibelius's thrilling Symphony No. 2.
