Claudio Abbado is on the podium at Berlin's famous "Forest Stage" for a programme celebrating the drama and excitement of Italian opera. He and the Berliner Philharmoniker are joined by soprano Angela Gheorghiu, tenor Sergei Larin and bass-baritone Bryn Terfel for arias and duets from operas by Verdi and Bellini, and the Rundfunkchor Berlin are on hand to perform favourite choruses. Abbado and his orchestra, meanwhile, are on scintillating form in some of the most famous Italian opera overtures – as well as, to close, the obligatory performance of Paul Lincke's Berliner Luft!
