Elīna Garanča stars in Bizet's Carmen
Arena di Verona
From the 99th Arena di Verona Opera Festival in 2022, Elīna Garanča sings one of the most iconic roles in the mezzo-soprano repertoire: the seductive gypsy Carmen. She leads the cast in this performance of Bizet's hit opera in Franco Zeffirelli's classic production of 1995, refashioned to integrate ideas from the 2009 revival as well as elements from the original designs never realized before. Garanča brings characteristic intelligence, intensity and vocal allure to her role and is joined by a superb line-up of colleagues: American tenor Brian Jagde as Don José, the soldier who falls inescapably for Carmen's charms; Maria Teresa Leva as the innocent, loving Micaëla; and Claudio Sgura as the dangerously charismatic toreador Escamillo.
