The French piano virtuoso Michel Béroff first drew attention for his performances of Messiaen, but his artistry – and his intellect – is far-ranging, and for more than half a century he's been admired as one of the pre-eminent figures in French piano playing, with students including Seong-Jin Cho. In 1983 he performed at the Munich Klaviersommer in a programme that was typical of his imaginative, insightful approach to the keyboard repertoire, pairing the concentrated expression of Schoenberg's Piano Pieces Op.19 with a sequence of Debussy's Préludes at their most imaginative. Two 20th-century giants, in the hands of an understated master.
