For nine decades, the summer opera festival at Glyndebourne has conducted a love affair with the operas of Mozart, and it's hard to imagine a more beautiful staging of Mozart's escape comedy than the production that director David McVicar created for the festival in 2015. Mozart's characters move in a world of delicately tinted 18th-century orientalism. But beneath the exquisite surface, passions burn with startling force, and with a cast that includes Sally Matthews and Brenden Gunnell, the results are as compelling as they are touching. Under Robin Ticciati, the period-instrument Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment adds its own special spice.
