Thomas Füri, a highly esteemed Swiss violinist, left an indelible mark in the world of music. Born on 22 July 1947, Füri began his violin studies with his father, Erich Füri, and further refined his technique and artistry under Max Rostal at the Hochschule für Musik Bern and with Ivan Galamian at the Juilliard School in New York.

Career Milestones

Early in his career, Füri held concertmaster positions in Koblenz, Lausanne, and Basel from 1973 to 1980. He became leader and director of Camerata Bern, the renowned conductorless chamber orchestra, a post he held from 1979 to 1993. Füri's dedication to perfecting his craft was evident throughout his life, marking him as a standout figure in the classical music scene.

As a teacher, Füri contributed significantly, holding professorships at the Hochschule für Musik Basel and teaching at music schools in Winterthur and Zurich between 1980 and 1991. He joined the acclaimed salon music quintet I Salonisti in 1985, performing with them until 2000. His appearances with I Salonisti included a cameo in the 1997 film Titanic. From 2000, he was a member of the Aria Quartet.

Füri is credited with a substantial discography for labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, EMI, Decca, Denon, Erato, and Novalis. He was awarded the Musikpreis des Kantons Bern in 1993 for his services to music. He was especially recognized for his performances of works by Fritz Kreisler, producing enduring reference recordings.
