Born in Weimar, Matthias Goerne studied with Hans-Joachim Beyer in Leipzig, then with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Since his opera debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1997 as Papageno under the direction of Christoph von Dohnányi, the baritone has appeared at Covent Garden in London, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Zurich Opera, the Semperoper in Dresden, the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Saito Kinen Festival in Japan, among other houses. His repertoire also includes, among other roles, Wolfram in Tannhäuser, Tchaikovsky’s Onegin, Berg’s Wozzeck and Aribert Reimann’s Lear. Goerne is a regular guest at the world’s leading festivals and concert venues, including the Carnegie Hall in New York and the Wigmore Hall in London, and he has worked with most of the major conductors and orchestras on the international scene. As one of his generation’s foremost lieder recitalists, he counts among his musical partners pianists such as Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Leif Ove Andsnes, Alfred Brendel, Christoph Eschenbach, Elisabeth Leonskaja, and Daniil Trifonov. Goerne has been artist in residence at both the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. His artistry has been documented on numerous recordings, as well, many of which have received prestigious awards, including four Grammy nominations, an ICMA Award, a Gramophone Award, the BBC Music Magazine Vocal Award 2017, and a Diapason d’or arte. He was also named the 2017 ECHO Klassik Singer of the Year.
