Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson (1932–2004) was a versatile and influential American composer, conductor, and arranger whose career spanned classical music, jazz, dance, film, television, and popular genres. Perkinson was named after the celebrated Afro-British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875–1912), reflecting both his family’s aspirations and admiration for Black excellence in classical music. Raised in a musically rich environment by his mother, a piano teacher and theater director, Perkinson began composing in his youth and pursued formal studies at the High School of Music and Art in New York City, New York University, and the Manhattan School of Music, earning both bachelor's and master's degrees in composition. His teachers included Vittorio Giannini, Charles Mills, and Earl Kim, giving him a solid foundation in both traditional and contemporary compositional techniques.

Major Achievements and Style of Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson

Perkinson was a co-founder of the Symphony of the New World in 1965, the first racially integrated orchestra in the United States. He later served as its music director. His career extended to work with renowned dance companies, including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and the Jerome Robbins American Theater Lab.
