Oliviero de Fabritiis (1902–1982) is celebrated as one of Italy’s most accomplished opera conductors, renowned for his masterful interpretations of the Italian Romantic operatic repertoire. After studying at the conservatory in his native Rome, de Fabritiis made his early debut at the Teatro Nazionale in 1920, launching a career that would see him play a pivotal role in the Italian operatic scene.
He worked extensively in Rome and Salerno, eventually serving as artistic secretary at the Rome Opera House from 1932 to 1943. In 1937, de Fabritiis inaugurated the celebrated summer opera performances at the Baths of Caracalla with Lucia di Lammermoor, a tradition that continues to this day. He made major international debuts, including at the Edinburgh Festival in 1963 and his Covent Garden debut in 1965.
