Jordi Cervello: A Brief Biography

Jordi Cervelló (1935–2022) was a prominent Catalan composer and violinist from Barcelona. Initially trained as a violinist, Cervelló's performing career was cut short by a car accident in 1960, after which he dedicated himself fully to composition. Over his prolific career, he became renowned for both his compositions and his influential role as an educator and writer on violin technique.

Classical Influences and Output

Cervelló's work was shaped by his early and advanced violin studies, notably with Rosa García Faria, Joan Massià, Franco Tufari (Milan), and Eugen Prokop, including participation in masterclasses at Siena and Salzburg’s Mozarteum. His main composition mentor was Josep Maria Roma, with whom Cervelló completed studies in harmony, counterpoint, orchestral analysis, and instrumentation. His style often emphasized virtuosic but "natural technique," aiming for expressive music of spontaneous character and accessible virtuosity.

Notable Compositions

Among Cervelló’s best-known works—particularly resonant for violinists given his background—are: Concertino for violin and strings, 4 Capricci for violin solo, Sonatina for solo violin, Two Divertimenti for two violins, Petita suite for piano solo, and Gemini for violin and cello soloists and strings.
