Fedor Glushchenko: A Conductor of Remarkable Artistry

Raised between Ukrainian and Russian musical traditions, Glushchenko rose to prominence after graduating from the Moscow and Saint Petersburg Conservatories. He enjoyed a distinguished career leading orchestras in Russia, Ukraine, the UK, Italy, and Spain, serving in notable posts such as head of the Arturo Toscanini Orchestra in Italy and the RTVE Symphony in Madrid during the 1990s.

Glushchenko was highly regarded for his ability to draw expressive performances from orchestras and for championing underperformed repertoire. He was a favorite guest conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and made a memorable Proms debut in 1994. Critics celebrated his Chandos recordings with the BBC Philharmonic, especially for their vivid interpretations of composers like Khachaturian and Ippolitov-Ivanov. His recording of Khachaturian’s “Triumphal Poem” was singled out for its astounding sound quality and energy, while his performances of Ippolitov-Ivanov captivated audiences and brought Russian music to the heart of British concert halls.

Glushchenko's legacy is that of a conductor devoted to musical exploration—bringing both well-known and unjustly neglected pieces to new life while inspiring orchestras and audiences with his depth of knowledge and persuasive artistry.
