Life and Career of Franz Krommer
Franz Krommer (1759–1831), also known by his Czech name František Vincenc Kramář, was a prolific and highly respected Czech composer whose career flourished in Vienna during the late Classical and early Romantic periods. Krommer was born in the Moravian town of Kamenice and received his first musical training from his uncle, Anton Matthias Krommer, a distinguished composer and choirmaster. After developing his craft as a violinist and organist, he moved to Vienna, where he established himself as one of the most successful Czech composers of his era. He held prominent positions at various aristocratic courts and, in 1818, succeeded Leopold Koželuch as the composer for the Imperial Court of Austria—a post he maintained until his death.
Compositional Output and Style
Krommer’s output was exceptionally prolific, comprising over 300 published works spanning at least 110 opus numbers. His music is characterized by its idiomatic writing for both strings and winds, often displaying a bright, energetic, and lyrical style. Krommer’s works were widely published and performed throughout Europe during his lifetime, contributing to his status as one of the most influential composers of chamber and wind ensemble music in the early 19th century.
