Born on October 28, 1803, in Stuhlweissenburg, Austria (now Székesfehérvár, Hungary), Caroline Unger began her musical journey studying piano under Aloysia Weber Lange in Vienna, and later received voice lessons from Giuseppe Ciccimarra and Domenico Ronconi. Unger made her debut in Vienna in 1821 and became celebrated for her performances across Europe, including in Naples, Milan, Paris, and Vienna. Notably, she participated in the premiere of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in 1824, where she was the contralto soloist alongside soprano Henriette Sontag.

Notable Performances and Career Highlights

Apart from her work with Beethoven, Unger showcased her immense talent and intelligence as a singer, earning her recognition as one of the most outstanding singers of her time. Her performances during the early 19th century place her in the same musical landscape as Franz Schubert. Unger retired from the opera stage in 1843 after a performance in Dresden but continued to sing in concerts under her married name, Caroline Unger-Sabatier. She passed away on March 23, 1877, near Florence, Italy.
