Nat Adderley’s Enduring Standard: The Old Country

Nat Adderley’s composition "The Old Country" stands as one of his most memorable works. This lyrical ballad was first recorded by bassist Sam Jones in 1960, but it was written by Nat Adderley and Curtis Lewis. Over the decades, it has become a jazz standard, admired for its evocative melody and richly emotional undertones.

A Legendary Performance by Keith Jarrett Trio

Experience the vibrant collaboration of the popular trio - Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and Jack DeJohnette in their latest live session; Standards Live. The trio, best known for their innovative and fresh take on jazz standards, delivers a knockout performance that's sure to captivate every jazz enthusiast.

On September 16, 1992, pianist Keith Jarrett returned to the historic Deer Head Inn in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains for a special homecoming performance. Sharing the stage with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette, Jarrett’s trio delivered a set that included a notably "bluesy account" of "The Old Country," which was later released on the album "At the Deer Head Inn". This performance was remarkable not only for its musical quality but also for its historical significance: it marked Jarrett and DeJohnette's first collaboration in 16 years, in the very venue where Jarrett began his career as a teenager.

Musical and Emotional Resonance

Reviewers have noted that Nat Adderley’s "The Old Country" resonates as both a personal and musical elegy—a yearning for a bygone era, akin to Jarrett’s own nostalgic composition "Country". The Deer Head Inn performance is described as intimate and deeply heartfelt, with the audience attentively absorbing every note in the cozy, storied venue.
