In December 1927, Bigard joined Duke Ellington’s Orchestra, remaining for over 14 years. Every clarinet solo on Ellington’s recordings during Bigard’s tenure was performed by him, including iconic pieces like "Clarinet Lament" (also known as "Barney’s Concerto"). After leaving Ellington in 1942, Bigard moved to Los Angeles, later working with Fred Slack and Kid Ory, among others.
