The Brabant Ensemble, Stephen Rice

Duration73 Min

The Brabant Ensemble is dedicating a program to the works of Mouton in anticipation of the 500th anniversary of his death on October 30, 2022. As specialists in Renaissance polyphony, they are presenting a diverse collection of his compositions of remarkable quality. Mouton, who was probably born in Samer, worked in various locations in France before spending his final years at the royal court in Paris.

The motets "Confitemini Domino" and "Benedicam Dominum," taken from the same manuscript in the Sistine Chapel, are characterized by canonic voices and complex musical structures. These pieces demonstrate Mouton's harmonic mastery and emotional depth as he praises God in the minor key. In his works "Gaude virgo Katherina" and "Illuminare, Jerusalem," Mouton demonstrates his artistic elegance through economical means and structural clarity, paying homage to Saint Catherine of Alexandria and the heavenly light.

The motets "Confitemini Domino" and "Benedicam Dominum," taken from the same manuscript in the Sistine Chapel, are distinguished by their canonic voices and complex musical structures. "O quam fulges in aetheris" honors the Virgin Mary with recurring poetic elements, while "Laudate Deum in sanctis eius" has a joyful and vibrant character. In contrast, "O salutaris hostia," with its Eucharistic hymn, leads listeners into a state of quiet contemplation. Mouton's repertoire encompasses various musical forms, including impressive Mass settings such as the "Missa Faulte d'argent," which represents a high point in his work.

His five-part Mass "Missa Tu es Petrus" and other compositions such as "Litanei Sancti Dei omnes" demonstrate Mouton's ability to compose deeply moving music. The meticulous shaping and multifaceted development in works like the "Agnus Dei" reveal his superb compositional technique. Mouton's music reflects his profound spiritual devotion and artistic refinement, qualities that continue to be appreciated today.
