String Quartets Different Trains
From 1988 to 2010, Steve Reich composed the three string quartets Different Trains, Triple Quartet, and WTC 9/11. Now, Deutsche Grammophon is releasing this trilogy for the first time as a joint album featuring new recordings by the Mivos Quartet. Described by the Chicago Reader as one of the boldest and most passionate ensembles for contemporary music in the USA, the Mivos Quartet developed its interpretations in close collaboration with Steve Reich. The musicians drew inspiration from speech rhythms, Bartókian allusions, and the defining events of a day filled with horror. The composer accompanied the project from the outset, offering guidance on stylistic questions, assisting with musical nuances, and supporting the release, which is available digitally, on CD, and on vinyl.
