Album insights
Avi Avital introduces the mandolin like never before with his album "Art of the Mandolin," aiming to narrate the instrument's unfinished tale of familiarity and mystery. The Grammy-winning virtuoso from Israel collaborated with the Venice Baroque Orchestra and harpist Anneleen Lenaerts, curating a tribute to the diverse repertoire of the mandolin. Avital exclusively selected original compositions for his instrument, featuring Vivaldi's concerto, Scarlatti's sonata, Beethoven's lesser-known Adagio ma non troppo for mandolin and harpsichord (or harp), along with contemporary chamber music and solo works by various composers. Reflecting both its past and present, this recording showcases the spectrum of classical mandolin music, marking a significant milestone in the instrument's history and repertoire. Beginning his classical repertoire concerts almost two decades ago, Avital recalls his instrument's initial novelty status, which has since evolved to secure the mandolin a prominent position in the classical music scene through performances at prestigious concert halls and collaborations with renowned orchestras worldwide.
