Album insights
Dustin O'Halloran, an acclaimed American pianist and composer, known for his work on various notable projects like "Lion," "Transparent," and "Marie Antoinette," is one of the most successful figures in the modern film music domain. Alongside Adam Wiltzie, he has achieved global success as part of the ambient duo A Winged Victory for the Sullen. His latest project, "Silfur," is a reflection on the interplay between music and time. O'Halloran embarked on a captivating musical journey into the past, reimagining some of his early solo piano pieces with new emotive string arrangements, recorded at meaningful locations in Iceland that hold personal significance for him. One such place was the old wooden Fríkirkjan Church in Reykjavík, where he performed his first Icelandic concert years ago with Jóhann Jóhannsson and Hauschka. This album's title, "Silfur," derived from the Icelandic Silfurberg Kristall, meaning Silver Rock, symbolizes the unique trait of bending light, making objects appear doubled - a phenomenon akin to how the artist perceives time, dividing it into two facets simultaneously: past and present.
