Album insights
Sir John Eliot Gardiner, one of the most prominent Bach interpreters, significantly contributed to Bach's works' current popularity. His acclaimed recordings of the Christmas Oratorio in 1987 were celebrated by critics. Over 35 years later, Gardiner, along with "The Monteverdi Choir" and "The English Baroque Soloists," released an album offering a fresh interpretation of the masterpiece. Recorded over two evenings in December 2022 at St. Martin in the Fields in London, the iconic composition comprises six cantatas, each based on a different biblical scene. Gardiner praises Bach's endless artistry, imagination, and creativity, highlighting the timeless energy and inspiration of the work despite nearly 300 years since its first performance. The album is available digitally, on CD, and Blu-Ray, complete with a companion booklet, just in time for the holiday season.
