Serenade in C Major, K. 648 "A Very Little Night Music" (Original Version for 2 Violins & Bass)

Dr. Ulrich Leisinger

A previously unknown composition by Mozart, the 'Ganz kleine Nachtmusik' KV 648 (also known as Serenade in C), was discovered in September 2024 by the International Mozarteum Foundation in the Leipzig Municipal Music Library. The work for string trio, consisting of two violins and a cello, dates from Mozart's early teens and was probably composed before his first trip to Italy, in the mid- to late 1760s. The serenade comprises seven miniature movements with a total duration of approximately 12 minutes. On September 19, 2024, the piece was presented to the public under the direction of Dr. Ulrich Leisinger, after researchers discovered it in the Carl Ferdinand Becker Collection. The authentication and scholarly analysis took place during the compilation of the latest edition of the Köchel catalogue, the definitive catalogue of Mozart's complete works.
