Don Giovanni is one of those operas that holds a mirror to its audience; Mozart's great seducer says something fresh to every generation that encounters him. And since the action is set in Spain anyway, what could be more natural than to set it in a Spain that was instantly recognisable to the audience at Madrid's Teatro Real? In 2005, director Lluis Pasqual created this bold and stylish production set in the Franco era, with Don Giovanni (Carlos Álvarez) as a playboy, and designs that evoke both the glamour and the underlying darkness of Mozart's endlessly fascinating drama.
