No pianist has divided the critics like Friedrich Gulda, the jazz-loving Austrian maverick whom some called a "musical terrorist". But what's beyond dispute is that Gulda was one of the supreme modern interpreters of Mozart, the composer he regarded as the "greatest of the greatest". This recital from the Munich Klaviersommer festival is typical of his eclectic approach: peerless accounts of two mature Mozart masterpieces, followed (in a touch of pure Gulda) by a freewheeling semi-improvised set shared with jazz organist Barbara Dennerlein. It shouldn’t work, but somehow – on this summer night in Munich in 1990 – it really does.
