Víkingur Ólafsson joins The Cleveland Orchestra and its music director, Franz Welser-Möst, for a programme – filmed in spring 2023 – juxtaposing French music with a Russian masterpiece seen through a French lens. To begin, conductor and orchestra perform the dramatic Third Symphony by Louise Farrenc, a fine, experlty crafted work only now returning to the repertoire after nearly 200 years' neglect. The programme concludes with the imaginative orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition by Maurice Ravel, whose brilliant Piano Concerto in G forms the concert's centrepiece – a showpiece for Ólafsson's diamantine touch and deep sensitivity.
