Mozart's final completed opera was commissioned for a coronation in Prague, as a celebration of royal authority. But this being Mozart, La Clemenza di Tito is infinitely more than that: expanding into a noble and intensely moving exploration of courage, compassion and the human price of power. In Ursel and Karl-Ernst Herrmann's 2005 staging for the Opéra National de Paris, the timeless blends with the intimate to drive straight to the heart of Mozart's late masterpiece. Christoph Prégardien sings the title role, and with Susan Graham as Sesto and Sylvain Cambreling conducting, the musical performances rise magnificently to Mozart's inspiration.
