The Life and Career of Jacobus Vaet
Jacobus Vaet (c. 1529–1567) was a prominent Flemish composer of the late Renaissance, celebrated particularly for his sacred vocal music. He was associated with the Habsburg court, serving as kapellmeister to Maximilian II—first as King of Bohemia and later as Holy Roman Emperor—making Vaet a central figure in the musical life of Vienna and the broader imperial court.
Born in Courtrai or Harelbeke, he began as a choirboy at the Church of Notre Dame in Courtrai. By January 1, 1554, he served as kapellmeister in the court of Archduke Maximilian, later Emperor Maximilian II. Vaet's tenure was cut short by his early death at around age 37, but he left a substantial legacy. His death was widely mourned by contemporaries, including the Emperor himself.
