Album insights

Max Richter, one of the world's most influential musical voices today, has touched and inspired millions globally with groundbreaking works like "SLEEP," "Vivaldi Recomposed," and his recent "VOICES," inspired by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. His film soundtracks for major Hollywood blockbusters have also captivated audiences. In his latest album, Max Richter delves once more into the pressing questions of our era. A decade ago, "Exiles" was born amidst the hope sparked by the Arab Spring. Moved deeply by the tragedy of the migration crisis, Richter translated his compassion into a ballet score of the same name for the Nederlands Dans Theater, partnering with choreographers Sol León and Paul Lightfoot. "Composing allows me to articulate things that move me," Richter reflects. Recorded in Tallinn in 2019 by Kristjan Järvi and the Baltic Sea Philharmonic, the album features new orchestral renditions of some of his iconic past works, including "On the Nature of Daylight." Notable in films such as "Arrival" and series like "The Handmaid’s Tale," this piece is among the newly orchestrated tracks. The album also showcases versions of "The Haunted Ocean," "Infra 5," "Sunlight," and the unreleased "Flowers of Herself." Music, Richter stresses, holds its own voice in culture, contributing to discussions on how we should live. Creativity, for him, involves exploring and reflecting on aspects of our world through art, prompting reflection and dialogue. As Nina Simone posited, it is an artist's duty to "reflect the times." Throughout his career, Richter has consistently shared thought-provoking messages through music imbued with depth and beauty. "Exiles" is now available in CD, LP, download, and streaming formats.
