With "The Gleaners," Larry Grenadier presents a creative and profound album, drawing on a wide range of influences. The title was inspired by Agnès Varda's film "The Gleaners and I." The renowned bassist interprets his own compositions—including a tribute to his early idol Oscar Pettiford—as well as works by George Gershwin, John Coltrane, Paul Motian, Rebecca Martin, and Wolfgang Muthspiel. In his liner notes, Larry explains: "The creation of this record began with an inward look, an exploration of the fundamental aspects of my identity as a bassist. It was a search for the core of sound and timbre, for those harmonic and rhythmic elements that constitute the essence of musical identity."
This work represents an important addition to ECM's remarkable collection of solo double bass recordings. It was recorded in December 2016 at Avatar Studios in New York, produced by Manfred Eicher.
