The symphonic masterpieces of Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890-1974) are finally receiving the long-overdue recordings. This music radiates both beauty and intensity: Martin, whose formative experience was encountering Bach's St. Matthew Passion before his 13th birthday, allows this influence to shine through in his luminous compositions. In the Polyptyque, Muriel Cantoreggi soars above two string orchestras and enters into dialogue with Juliane Banse's soprano in the poignant Maria Triptych. The German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Christoph Poppen, delivers sensitive interpretations.
