Cello Sonata in G Minor, Op. 19

Yuja Wang

The renowned pianist Yuja Wang and the celebrated cellist Gautier Capuçon have recorded Sergei Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 19, for Deutsche Grammophon. Considered an outstanding example of late Romanticism, the work presents both musicians with considerable challenges, and Wang and Capuçon prove to be ideal interpreters. Their recording reflects an equal partnership, engaging deeply with the sonata's moving emotions and striking contrasts. From its somber opening to its joyful finale, they impressively shape every turn of the music, demonstrating their close musical connection. The sonata, which Rachmaninoff dedicated to the virtuoso Anatoliy Brandukov, premiered in Moscow in 1901 with the composer at the piano and represents Rachmaninoff's most significant contribution to chamber music before he turned to composing for the stage, choir, and orchestra.
