Scandalously Successful

The release of the Tenth Symphony was described by the Sunday Times last year as "scandalously successful." Now, Shostakovich's Symphonies Nos. 5, 8, and 9 are being released with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Andris Nelsons. The Latvian conductor, who has served as Boston's music director since 2014, also assumed the position of the 21st Gewandhaus Kapellmeister in Leipzig the previous autumn. He will begin conducting this renowned German orchestra in the 2017/18 season. Nelsons, internationally known for his innovative approach, is one of the few conductors of his generation who grew up in the Soviet-influenced musical world. He shares this biographical connection with Shostakovich. With Deutsche Grammophon, he is planning a complete cycle of Shostakovich's works, which has already garnered several Grammy Awards for Best Orchestral Performance.
