Album insights
Magdalena Hoffmann has released her second DG album, "Fantasia," devoted entirely to the Baroque period. Exploring the formal rigidity and improvisational essence of this era, Hoffmann showcases her instrument through a selection of fantasias and preludes originally composed for keyboard instruments or the lute by Bach, his sons Wilhelm Friedemann and Carl Philipp Emanuel, as well as contemporaries like George Frideric Handel and Silvius Leopold Weiss. Leveraging the unique sound and versatility of her instrument, Hoffmann introduces new dynamic and spatial dimensions within the imaginative repertoire. She emphasizes the profound emotional intensity and liberation achievable on her instrument, stating, "On this instrument, there lies enormous inner tension and emotional dynamics that have a liberating effect." She adds, "Each time the 'Fantasia' is played, it can sound different, infinitely vibrant, and impossible to capture definitively."
