Album insights

Born in Bregenz in 1992 to Iranian parents, Kian Soltani, the winner of the International Paulo Cello Competition in Helsinki, stands out as one of the most thrilling cellists of his time. As the principal cellist of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, and a chamber music collaborator with talents like Anne-Sophie Mutter and Daniel Barenboim, he navigates between two cultures, feeling a sense of belonging in Vorarlberg while cherishing his Persian heritage. Soltani's debut album, HOME, delves into this dual sense of belonging, intertwining the works of Schubert and Schumann from the German-Austrian Romantic era with contemporary Iranian music by Reza Vali. Teaming up with pianist Aaron Pilsan, whose journey reflects parallels to his own, Soltani shares, "There's an unmistakable feeling when you know a place inside out - the colors, the air, the scent; that's home. Through music and selected composers, that fundamental sensation is evoked."
