The solo songs and part-songs of Johannes Brahms are always poetic, often playful and occasionally almost too profound for words. Compared to his better known orchestral and choral music, they’re often overlooked. But they’re one of the most intimate – and important – facets of Brahms’s creativity, and for the 1989 Munich Kaviersommer, the celebrated choral society of Neubeuern in Bavaria created an evening-long exploration of these miniature masterpieces, specially arranged, and linked by Brahms’s solo piano music. The result is a captivating and intensely personal portrait of the artist, conducted by the society’s hugely respected music director Enoch zu Guttenberg.
