The world premiere of Bellini's I Puritani in 1835 featured four of the most famous opera singers in the world – a group that performed together repeatedly thereafter, soon nicknamed "the Puritani Quartet". Nearly two centuries after the debut of Bellini's final opera, this exceptionally fine 2016 performance from Madrid boasts an equivalently starry line-up of bel canto specialists. Led by soprano Diana Damrau and tenor Javier Camarena as the piece's star-crossed lovers, the cast also includes baritone Ludovic Tézier and bass-baritone Nicolas Testé. Evelino Pidò conducts a strikingly elegant staging directed by Emilio Sagi.
