During the Met’s 2022–23 season, Nadine Sierra took on a touchstone soprano role, the courtesan Violetta Valéry in Verdi’s timeless tragedy La Traviata. In this performance, recorded as part of the company’s Live in HD series, Sierra headlines Michael Mayer’s vivid production, sharing the stage with tenor Stephen Costello as Violetta’s ardent yet impetuous lover, Alfredo, and baritone Luca Salsi as his father, Giorgio Germont, whose unbending resolve dooms their life together. Milanese maestro Daniele Callegari takes the podium to lead Verdi’s masterful score, which is simultaneously tuneful and heartbreaking. (© The Metropolitan Opera)
