“Watching lightning crackle and disappear from the sky,” is how one critic described the experience of hearing Dominican-born Latin jazz pianist Michel Camilo at the top of his game. The weather was hot in Munich in the summer of 1994 and no question, there was electricity in the air when Camilo came together with regular collaborators Michael Bowie on bass and Cliff Almond on drums for a set that’s small-scale only in the most literal sense. You can feel the inspiration building and breaking loose, as they give their all to an extended sequence of Camilo’s own classics.
