Austrian pianist Friedrich Gulda rejoiced in his reputation as a rule-breaker – equally happy playing jazz fusion, or experimenting at the outer limits of musical taste. But few artists of his generation respected and understood Mozart more profoundly, and this typically inventive recital given at the Vienna Konzerthaus in 1990, is a very personal (and typically idiosyncratic) homage. Mozart, after all, was a supreme improviser and after a movement from the Coronation concerto and the mighty C minor Fantasia, Gulda and his handpicked Paradise Band meet Mozart on his own terms: jazz-fusion at its most inventive and unpredictable.
