The world premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki’s Violin Concerto No. 2 “Metamorphosen” brought a landmark moment to the Leipzig Gewandhaus in June 1995. Penderecki, present for the occasion, had composed the concerto for Anne-Sophie Mutter and dedicated it to her. Steeped in his late musical voice – darkly lyrical, expansive and coloured by Middle European tradition – the work emerges with striking immediacy. Together with Mariss Jansons and the MDR-Sinfonieorchester, Mutter unveils a score that moves between intimacy and intensity, echoing Bartók, Shostakovich and Szymanowski while remaining unmistakably Penderecki.
