This film offers an unusual encounter with Schumann’s Symphony No. 2, captured in Salzburg in 2000 during rehearsals with the Camerata Salzburg under Roger Norrington. Filmed up close rather than in performance conditions, it preserves a sense of spontaneity and transparency, revealing the music in a state of active discovery. Norrington’s characteristically direct approach to Schumann’s score comes through with particular freshness, as ideas are shaped in real time. The film is preceded by an extended rehearsal introduction, in which the conductor addresses the orchestra directly, setting out his thinking about the work and its place within Schumann’s symphonic world.
