Wagner: Der fliegende Holländer (Bayreuth, 2021)
Three highly anticipated debuts made this production of Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer at the Bayreuth Festival an exceptional event: after her sensational success as Salome at the Salzburg Festival, soprano Asmik Grigorian performed Senta with compelling expressiveness and emotional power; director Dmitri Tcherniakov added an intriguing additional new layer to the story of the Dutchman crossing the oceans for eternity; and Ukrainian Oksana Lyniv became the first female conductor in the festival's long history to appear on the green hill – and was celebrated by audiences and press alike.
