Although Anne-Sophie Mutter made a celebrated audio recording of Beethoven's Violin Concerto with Herbert von Karajan for Deutsche Grammophon in the late 1970s – while she was still in her teens – violinist and conductor waited until February 1984 before making this filmed account, which remained largely unknown until after Karajan's death in 1989. The veteran maestro had been keen to give his erstwhile protégée time to develop before tackling the work again and the results show breathtaking musical maturity alongside technical control and precision, all captured in innovative style at the Philharmonie in Berlin in a film realized by Karajan with director Ernst Wild.
