Three trailblazing artists unite in this premiere at the Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles. Gustavo Dudamel and Yuja Wang join forces to perform John Adams’ third composition for solo piano and orchestra, that once again highlights the composer’s great ability to combine vast soundscapes with vivid narratives. The three parts connect seamlessly and tightly interweave the ensemble with the part of the piano that makes full use of the keyboard with block chords, shifting rhythms, and alternating parallel and contrary passages. Wang perfectly balances lyricism with rhythm, virtuosity with playfulness, and lightness with explosiveness – highlighting the contrasting qualities that make it clear: the devil lies in the details.
