The Cypriot pianist Nicolas Economou rocketed to international attention aged just 16, with an astonishing appearance at the 1969 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition, and for much of his career before his untimely death at the age of 40, he was most closely associated with the virtuoso Romantic repertoire. But he was a master of all he played, and this recital, recorded in the Herkulessaaal in Munich in 1985 finds him exploring the so-called “Old Testament of the Piano”, the first book of Bach's 48 Preludes and Fugues: a uniquely perceptive and satisfying reading of music that can never grow old.
