Richard Strauss's Elektra is arguably opera's most powerful, concentrated and shocking tale of obsession and revenge. In this 2013 production from the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Patrice Chéreau's last opera staging, the role of Elektra is taken by Evelyn Herlitzius, who embodied the role like few others, dominating the tangible dramatic world that the director so compellingly created. With an outstanding cast – including Adrianna Pieczonka as her idealistic sister Chrysothemis and Waltraud Meier as her nightmare-addled mother, Klytaemnestra – and authoritative conducting from Esa-Pekka Salonen, the result is 100 minutes of music drama at the highest level of intensity.
