The Musical Genius of Jiří Antonín Benda

Jiří Antonín Benda, also known as Georg Anton Benda, was an eminent Bohemian (Czech) composer, violinist, and Kapellmeister of the Classical period. Born in 1722, Benda left a rich legacy of music that continues to enchant listeners worldwide. He was celebrated especially for his melodramas and innovations in theater music, as well as for his significant contributions to the development of keyboard and orchestral repertoire.

Benda's Notable Compositions

Benda gained widespread renown for his stage works, including about ten operas, several operettas, and melodramas such as Ariadne auf Naxos, Medea, and Pygmalion—the last of which remains one of his best-known works. He was particularly pioneering in the melodrama genre, seamlessly blending spoken dialogue with expressive orchestral accompaniment.

Benda also made notable contributions to the concerto and symphonic forms of his time. His instrumental and keyboard works, while their exact count remains uncertain, include violin concertos, symphonies, and sonatas. His output also includes a substantial number of Lieder, cantatas, Masses, and an oratorio.

Selected Recordings of Benda's Works

The magic of Benda's music is brought to life in a number of recordings. Our highlight is Benda’s Piano Concertos – an essential addition to any classical music lover's collection. This audio collection, part of the Hyperion Classical Piano Concerto 8, brilliantly captures the intensity and fervor of Benda's music. The concertos are performed by Howard Shelley and the London Mozart Players – musicians known for their exquisite interpretation of classical pieces.

Equally captivating is a compilation of works by Vivaldi, Bach, Handel, Benda, Sarasate & Wieniawski performed by the dynamic father-son duo – David and Igor Oistrakh. Joined by Vladimir Yampolsky, Hans Pirschner, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and Gewandhausorchester Leipzig under the direction of Franz Konwitschny, the Oistrakhs present a collection that is a testament to their virtuosity and stellar musicianship.

Complementing the instrumental selections is "Cephalus and Aurora – Lieder & Music for Fortepiano". Emma Kirkby and Rufus Müller lend their vocals to Benda's soulful compositions, with Timothy Roberts providing the fortepiano accompaniment. The collection is a delightful showcase of Benda's more lyrical side, demonstrating his mastery over both composition and vocals.
