William Corbett: Overview and Legacy

William Corbett (c. 1675–1748) was a distinguished English violinist, composer, and orchestra director known for his significant contributions to early 18th-century music in England. His career spanned key positions at major London theatres, and his innovative works influenced the English Baroque style. Despite being under-recognized, Corbett's notable contributions to the world of classical music continue to inspire artists today. Career Highlights

Corbett served as orchestra director at the New Theatre in Lincoln's Inn Fields from 1700. He was appointed concertmaster of the orchestra at the Queen’s Theatre in London from 1705–1711. In 1716, he became a member of the Royal Orchestra and was appointed Director of the King's Band. Corbett lived in Italy from 1715 to 1727, where he immersed himself in the Italian musical tradition and collected a significant array of instruments and musical works.

Among his most celebrated works is "Le Bizzarie Universali, Op. 8." Published in 1728, this set of concertos consists of twelve concertos for strings, described as being written "on all the new gustos in his travels through Italy." Corbett also wrote numerous concertos for violins, oboes, trumpets, German flutes, and French horns, showcasing a wide array of instrumental colors. His output also includes sonatas, suites, trio sonatas, and character pieces such as "Passacaille en Rondeau" and "Prelude in A."
