Background and Style

Karol Rathaus was born in Ternopil, then part of Austria-Hungary (now Ukraine), and showed musical precocity, beginning to compose at an early age. He began his studies in Vienna (Academy of Performing Arts and Music) around 1913/1914, which were interrupted by WWI, then continued in Berlin under Franz Schreker at the Academy of Music. This connection fostered his affinity for opera and innovative orchestral writing. Rathaus gained prominence through his symphonies, ballets, and film scores, particularly in Berlin during the 1920s and early 1930s. As one of the most esteemed film composers in Germany before 1933, his works were later banned by the Third Reich, prompting his emigration first to Paris and London, and finally to New York. He became the first professor of composition at the newly formed Queens College (City University of New York) in 1940, continuing to compose significant orchestral and chamber works during his exile.

Reputation and Contributions

Rathaus’s music stands out for its rhythmic complexity, harmonic daring, and integration of East European elements. He was acclaimed for his ballets (such as Der letzte Pierrot and Le Lion Amoureux), orchestral works (including his Second Symphony and Louisville Prelude), and concert music for piano, with early works like the Variations and Fugue on a theme by Max Reger, Op. 1, and the First Piano Sonata, Op. 2, receiving critical praise. His individualism and refusal to conform to prevailing musical trends contributed to his lasting legacy as an important composer of the exile generation.
