Aleksander Zarzycki (1834–1895) was a notable Polish composer, pianist, conductor, and educator whose influence shaped the late-Romantic musical landscape in Poland. Born in Lwów (now Lviv, Ukraine), Zarzycki was recognized for both his virtuosic piano performances and his commitment to musical education and institution-building in Warsaw.

Młynarski & Zarzycki: Violin Concertos

Featured in the Hyperion Romantic Violin Concerto series (Volume 15), "Młynarski & Zarzycki: Violin Concertos" is an exceptional piece that displays Zarzycki's expertise in producing emotional and delicate tunes, a testament to his brilliant use of the violin. The performances by Eugene Ugorski, accompanied by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Michał Dworzyński, are especially noted for their vivid interpretation.

Zarzycki & Żeleński: Piano Concertos

As part of the Hyperion Romantic Piano Concerto series (Volume 59), "Zarzycki & Żeleński: Piano Concertos" showcases the charming blend of Zarzycki's passionate melodies paired with Żeleński's perfectly balanced harmony arrangements. Jonathan Plowright collaborates with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra led by Łukasz Borowicz to showcase Zarzycki’s dynamic and expressive piano writing—a testament to Zarzycki's own background as a concert pianist.

Homage to Paderewski

Although there is no direct evidence in the sources that Zarzycki’s works were featured in tributes specifically called "Homage to Paderewski", his works have been grouped with other Polish composers, underlining his place in the pantheon of influential Romantic composers from the region. This homage takes you on a journey through the evolution of Zarzycki's style, from his early compositions to his later works, enabling you to appreciate the depth and range of his genius.

Zarzycki initially studied piano in Berlin and performed widely across Europe before refocusing on composition and music education after settling in Warsaw in 1866. He became the first artistic director of the Warsaw Music Society in 1871, organizing choirs, orchestras, and fostering a culture of concert music in Poland. Later, as director of the Warsaw Music Institute, he reformed music education, rewriting course syllabuses and modernizing instruction.
